Ch-ch-ch-changes What is the single most important thing I can do to improve my health and fitness? Yup - stop smoking. So that's what I did. As of Saturday 27/01/06 I am a non-smoker. I've tried a couple of times in the past, with patches and failed. This time I am using Zyban and it seems to be working. I'm still getting cravings about twice an hour but that is hardly surprising given the 20+ a day I was smoking before. One thing I am concerned about is not pigging out to take the edge off the cravings. According to the nice nurse at the quit smoking classes I went to, the receptors in the brain which deal with nicotine are right next to the ones for food & water. This means that you can kinda get rid of a craving by eating food, especially sweet food. However, this is not a good idea since I am trying to lose weight at the moment so I think the answer is two-fold. As with any change the hardest part is changing the behaviour and that is what I am focusing on. The situations where I would previously have reached for a ciggarette automatically I need to have a different behaviour to replace that. At home it is easy - I can clean my teeth, take a shower, pummel Bob etc. However in the office or the car I have to do something different. I'm chewing a lot of gum at the moment but that is gonna make me fart like a Plum so I guess the solution is water. How much of this are you supposed to drink in a day again? Labels: Guff |
